Reel Rock Review

Last night in Carbondale (and Boulder) the Reel Rock Film tour had its world premier, featuring shortened versions of Peter Mortimer’s new film First Ascent, and Josh Lowell’s Dosage IV. I’d seen a preview of both at the Outdoor Retailer show in SLC in August. These versions were more polished, and very enjoyable. I thought First Ascent flowed really well, following Didier Berthoud in his quest for the Cobra Crack’s first ascent, some Black Canyon action, and a ridicuouls looking roof crack in Europe. I’ve enjoyed Peter’s other films (Return2Sender and Front Range Freaks) and it’s cool to see him evolving as a film maker.

The Dosage segment was pretty similiar to the preview I’d already seen. The footage of Tommy Caldwell freeing the Nose and Freerider in 24 hours is truly amazing, and will confirm that he is indeed on a different level. The Hueco footage was almost too insane, how can those people possibly climb that hard?

The proceeds from the evening went to HERA, including the silent auction. It was great to see the local community out supporting a great cause. Every one left the theater psyched to get out on the rocks and back to our own personal challenges. Too bad it’s raining today…
