Dead Horse Canyon

mike-deadhorse.jpgOne of the cool things about the upcoming 2nd edition of the Western Sloper guidebook is all the previously unpublished crags it will include. One of these is a small quartzite wall in Glenwood Canyon, just off the Dead Horse trail, near Hanging Lake. The wall sits in plain view of the most popular trail in the White River National Forest and yet somehow went overlooked until last spring. It now sports nine routes, with a possible tenth for any hard persons out there that want the FA of a short but steep 12+/13-. The climbing is reminiscent of the Gunks, as you plug gear into horizontal cracks and pull over roofs. While only about 50 feet at it’s tallest, the routes tend to be powerful and engaging, making it a nice spot for an afternoon session. Add to that a quick approach up a good trail, and it’s definitely worth checking out.

Look for a sneak preview topo coming out next week sometime.
