Biggest Rock Climbing Falls Caught on Video

When you’re out there pushing your limit on routes that are difficult for you, falling becomes just a normal part of climbing. But every now and then, you might find yourself looking at a big one, with no way out. Here’s a collection of some of the biggest air caught on video. Sit back with your coffee and enjoy the show.

On her first lead, she takes a huge fall and all her friends laugh at her!!!!

Great footage of Dean Potter falling right at the end of the crux on Epitaph.

This guy takes a dive off one of the biggest roofs in Australia.

There seems to be something about falling on this route that means big air time.

Adventure King Ice Whipper
Not rock climbing, but too good to leave off this list.

Scary Gym Fall

This guy comes within inches of hitting the floor of the gym from 30 feet up. Nice belaying.

  1. Awesome stuff. Nice work.

    1) First video is “To Defy…” at the Red. I have taken roughly the same fall as that pictured, not fun when you are that close to clipping the chains.

    2) That route at the Grampians is apparently well known for the huge run out at the end. Apparently you can whip from the chains and safely end up at the belay 80 feet below. This is regularly done apparently for victory whips as the fall takes place on the 2nd pitch.

    3) RE: the gnarly trad fall. How do you fall off when you are holding on to a TREE???

  2. yeah, the tree thing was puzzling to me too. You’d have to be pretty pumped not to be able to at least sling it and hang on the rope. Who knows?

  3. That ice climbing video almost made me puke. See the guy with the viking helmet? What a bunch of whackos! Hilarious!

  4. The first video is To Defy The Laws of Tradition at the red. Clipping the chains on that one is a little tricky if you don’t see the massive victory jug off to the left. I can kinda empathize with her as that was my first lead as well, no falls though.

  5. I just saw Asgard Jamming- a recent film made by the Favresse brothers and Sean Villenueve. It centers on attempts to free climb Mt. Asgard on Baffin Island. One of the Favresse brothers takes an absurd gear ripping fall in it. The movie itself is mediocre but there is no doubt that this is the biggest fall I have seen on film.

  7. This may be the longest ever caught on video but way back when, a great man and climber named Yvon Chounard was on the first assent of the North American Wall on El Cap and took a full run out of his rope fall on a long pitch that zippered all pro set in and only the belay caught him and he had back probs ever since that. Plus the rope stretch on his mantle, the fall was over 300 feet.

Bulldog Creek Dog Walk (IV WI 4+)

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
