2010 5Point Film Festival

Over the last couple of years, the beginning of May in Carbondale has come to mean one thing: the 5Point Film Festival. Now in its third year, this celebration of adventure focuses on respect, commitment, humility, purpose and balance (the 5 points). Last year’s event had some truly memorable and inspiring films, and this year’s line up looks even stronger, including a healthy representation of climbing related films. One of the things that has really stood out the last two years is how much effort the organizers put into finding films that reflect the 5 points, this isn’t just about jaw dropping images and super human athletes, though you will see those from time to time as well. This is about films that “inspire adventure of all kinds, connect generations through shared experience and respect, engage passion with a conscience, and educate through film.”

This year’s festival, running from April 29th to May 2nd, places an emphasis on honoring the filmmakers who’s creative vision makes it possible for all us to drop a 160′ waterfall, travel to far away places and climb the highest peaks, all from the comfort of our living rooms. Of interest to climbers will be appearances and/or presentations by Peter Mortimer, Jeremy Collins, Timmy O’Neill, Kelly Cordes and Renan Ozturk. Branching out from the big screen, the first ever 5Point Gallery Show is an ongoing display of the works of climbers/artists Renan Ozturk and Amee Hinkley at the CCAH gallery on Main Street, and there’s an ice cream social on Saturday afternoon featuring free Boulder Organic ice cream.

It’s a great weekend to visit the town, climb some local choss, and check out some great films, so be sure to get your tickets early, as the event consistently sells out. Hopefully we’ll see you there!

Bulldog Creek Dog Walk (IV WI 4+)

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
