Colorado Climbers Missing in China

In a situation that is eerily similar to Charlie Fowler and Christine Boskoff’s disappearance, 3 climbers from Colorado are overdue from an expedition to China. Jonny Copp, Micah Dash and Wade Johnson were attempting to climb a peak in the Western Sichuan Province, and were supposed to fly out on June 3rd.

According to this AP report that came in Saturday morning, one body has been found but not identified. As of Friday morning, several strong American climbers were en route, including Eric Decaria, Nick Martino, Pete Takeda and Steve Su, and hopefully more details are coming. I’ve never met Wade or Micah, but I have run into Jonny Copp over the last couple of years and he always struck me as a genuine and sincere fellow. Our prayers go out to these climbers and their families, and we’re hoping for some good news.

The best source of up-to-date info is available at the Adventure Film Blog, where you can also donate to the rescue effort.

You can also view threads on Mountain Project and Super Topo.

UPDATE: Details are coming in and they aren’t good. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all family and friends.

  2. I am saddened by the loss, may we all be so lucky to die in the pursuit of what gives our lives meaning, joy and purpose.

  3. Micah, Ed Visteurs and I put on a Mountain Hardwear event in Oregon together when I was managing an outdoor store in Eugene. We had dinner the night of the show and hung out afterward. My little time spent with him was enough to show me that he was a passionate and warm person. Everytime I saw him at Outdoor Retailer in SLC in the years to follow he always said hi when we saw each other, and always curious about what I was doing and climbing. People such as this aren’t abound in this world. Micah will be missed. Based on the reaction from my friends in Boulder, Johnny and Wade will be as well. This small band of brothers died doing what they loved, we should only hope to be so lucky when our time comes.

Bulldog Creek Dog Walk (IV WI 4+)

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
