As I’ve focused more and more on climbing in the winter, and less on skiing, I’ve experienced an unintended consequence: my legs have gotten smaller! This being the case, I’ve found myself in a funky spot were medium harnesses are good for my waist, but sometimes leave my legs swimming in loops that are too big. I’ve generally shied away from adjustable leg loops for most of my climbing career, as it always seemed to be just some extra clutter, but now I’m giving them a second look. I’ve been using the Petzl Adjama for the last two months and here’s what I found.
Like most Petzl harnesses, it feels pretty clunky out of the bag, but after a few sessions becomes less rigid. I found the large, padded waistbelt to be very comfortable, with a design that puts more padding on your hips, which tend to be the highest impact areas. The leg loop buckles are easy to adjust without having to take it off, and offer a wide range, from skinny sport climber to burly mountaineer wearing seven layers.
Unlike some of the lightweight options out there, it feels like it will last a long time and integrated ice clipper slots makes for an easy transition to ice season. The front gear loops are ample, and the 2015 model takes care of the most common complaint about the old one: rear gear loops that were too small. Now you’ve got more space to carry a full rack of trad gear. Thanks Petzl!
Three and a half out of four stars. Overall it’s a comfortable, adjustable rig that’s great for sport climbing, trad, ice and even mountaineering. The burly construction should hold up well, though there are certainly lighter offerings out there in the same vein.

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
