As I’ve focused more and more on climbing in the winter, and less on skiing, I’ve experienced an unintended consequence: my legs have gotten smaller! This being the case, I’ve found myself in a funky spot were medium harnesses are good for my waist, but sometimes leave my legs swimming in loops that are too big. I’ve generally shied away from adjustable leg loops for most of my climbing career, as it always seemed to be just some extra clutter, but now I’m giving them a second look. I’ve been using the Petzl Adjama for the last two months and here’s what I found.
Like most Petzl harnesses, it feels pretty clunky out of the bag, but after a few sessions becomes less rigid. I found the large, padded waistbelt to be very comfortable, with a design that puts more padding on your hips, which tend to be the highest impact areas. The leg loop buckles are easy to adjust without having to take it off, and offer a wide range, from skinny sport climber to burly mountaineer wearing seven layers.
Unlike some of the lightweight options out there, it feels like it will last a long time and integrated ice clipper slots makes for an easy transition to ice season. The front gear loops are ample, and the 2015 model takes care of the most common complaint about the old one: rear gear loops that were too small. Now you’ve got more space to carry a full rack of trad gear. Thanks Petzl!
Three and a half out of four stars. Overall it’s a comfortable, adjustable rig that’s great for sport climbing, trad, ice and even mountaineering. The burly construction should hold up well, though there are certainly lighter offerings out there in the same vein.
Retail is $74.95, more info and tech specs can be found here.

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
Would love to win one, I need a new harness this year! Thanks!
I would love to have one because those adjustable leg loops look like heaven to my skinny thighs.
The Petzl Adjama would be a great addition to my climbing gear because of its shape, design and color.
I’ve been climbing with the Petzl “Sama” (the “Adjama’s” little brother un-adjustable leg loop version) for about a year now and I love it! It would be great to have a harness that could accommodate layers more comfortably, as I would like to start climbing in more remote locations at higher altitude.
I’m coming in on the skinny legs side of things. I’ve lost enough thigh to be bottoming out my leg loops. #goteamtinylegs
I Would Love one because I have climbed in the older Adjama and I believe with every fiber of my being that it is the best climbing harness out there! Send Me One Please!
Need a better gear loops so I can be that guy climbing with a full set of draws in the gym… Sorry, couldn’t help it. Need to replace my 10 year old petzl corax. Perfect timing.
I feel your pain Michael. My chicken legs would love this harness.
Why don’t all harnesses have gear loops to the back and ice clipper slots?
Whoa, this looks awesome! I have an old harness that’s seen much better days. I would love to retire it for the Adjama. It will make multipitch so much more comfortable! 🙂
Adjamame.
I have used a light weight Petrel as my primary gym harness and my go to on hard sport onsights. I would love a new one before my current on is worn through.
Peace, love and zensends.
I would LOVE to have the NEW Adjama because my very old version of the Adjama is wearing thin, and I need a new harness for my Single Pitch Instructor Course (so that I can lead climbing trips for my school’s Outdoor Program and introduce people to the outdoor pursuit that has taken over my life in a great way!).
I absolutley need one because that blue matches my eyes and because during mid-term week I really need some support but most importantly I need one because… Safety first.
My current harness is on deaths doorstep and I am going to need to replace it after this winter before I get climbing again. The adjustable leg loops look awesome with a small waist and bigger thighs.
Because as a former dirtbag and now father of 3, I’m finding as I try to get back in shape from a few years off that all my gear is worn out and just plain old.
After raucous runs through some of Utah’s tightest slot canyons my harness looks like someone took a belt sander to it. Please give me this harness so I can send safely again and keep spraying about splitter choss!
I would love to have one so that I could get into sport climbing! Plus it looks extremely comfortable. BJ please man, do it for the children!
Wu-Tang is for the children!
I’d love to try out the harness! I have the sama; so this would be a neat addition for the photography hang 🙂
I’ve long envied my partNer’s Petzl harness. I want this one!
Well, my current harness is wearing out, I really need to replace it
I’d love one for the lower profile leg loops to get deeper in the wideness in the desert!
I would love to have one because I am as broke as climbers come. An it matches my eyes
Would love to rock the Petzl Adjama. My current harness is looking pretty manky and it’s tough getting new gear on a student budget!
I’m going to Wales and Donegal this year for some trad climbing, and my current harness has worn out! This one looks sweet!
Cheers 🙂
cuz its purty!
Broke and trying to get to yosemite this summer. It would be cool to get a new one!
Would luuv to win it because my other petzl harness is wearing out
Would love this harness as the one I purchased is getting a bit too big now that I’ve lost a bunch of weight through climbing. Like you, i’ve pretty much given up skiing this year for my new passion of climbing and my legs are getting skinnier so the adjustable leg loops will suit me great!
I would love to win this and then gift it to my brother.
I would like a new comfy harness to take on future climbing trips and enjoy some comfy multi-pitching!
I wore out the back gear loops on my old harness climbing Cat Nap on Cat Wall in Indian Creek
My wife climbed up until two days before she gave birth to our daughter over a year and a half ago and since then she’s seen maybe a total of 10 days of climbing. I’d love to gift her a new harness and a baby-free day of climbing to get her back into the sport she loves so much.
The choss is calling
and I must go
but here’s a little thing
that you oughta know
I need adjustable legs for any size
cuz I’m knockin ’em out with my American thighs!
I wouldn’t mind having one piece of gear not held together with duct tape…
I would love to have this harness as I am a student who just started climbing with friends and can’t afford a harness of my own. (especially since it will pretty much last forever)
I would love an Adjama, as I’m tired of climbing in a harness without a belay loop!
Me to. Am on a SAR team new member. Need one !
Petzl is the bestl. Splitterchoss is a paradox.
looks like a solid piece of gear – could use a new harness!
I’d like one – we all need some free gear sometimes.
I’m using the first climbing harness I every owned. I want to climb more often, so I might need a new harness!
My old Adjama’s gear loop just broke and I lost a bunch of cams. It’s now duck taped back together. Time for a new one before it happens again.
Climbing is way more committing without a harness! I need this so I can finally break through my 5.8 plateau without risk of death.
Petzl harnesses are the best and I need all the help I can get plus it is blue. And evidently should be everyones favorite color. http://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2012/04/blue%20is%20the%20best.html
I recently retired mine to be my gym harness, as it was showing wear and tear especially around the gear loops. I loved it ! Would love to have another ~
