Colorado High Country Fun

Well the snow has finally receded just enough to allow great access into the Colorado high country. In the last week I’ve climbed Grizzly Peak, Cathedral Peak (trip report coming soon from Tracy) and been up to Crater Lake below the Bells.

Now is a good time to hit some of those Elk Range peaks that are best climbed on snow, which holds together all the choss much better than when they are more melted off in August. You’ll still find good snow holding on in shady couloirs on the north and east sides of the peaks, the south and west aspects seem to be pretty melted out by now.

The weather lately has been good in the morning and stormy in the afternoons, be sure to get out there early. We raced a storm down the mountain yesterday, which was a little exciting at times, and potentially fatal if your luck is up. A family of five was struck near American Lake yesterday in the same storm we were trying to out run, thankfully it turned out well for all involved, though one victim had to be brought back to life by CPR. Be safe out there.
