Redstone Ice Conditions 1.11.09

Got out to swing the tools over the weekend in the 6th Annual Stoneyfest. More on that later this week, but here’s how things in Redstone are shaping up:

Banzai Pipeline – There’s definitely ice on it but its hard to say how much from the road. There’s tracks leading up to it, so maybe it’s in.

Avocado – Not in.

Dancing in the Moonlight – Looks like it’s in.

Crystal Visions – Looks good from the road, have fun postholing for 2 hours.

Tomato Chimney – In Fat, ditto on the postholing.

Stoneyfest – Looks good.

Dirty Linen Gully – IN

Pencil – No ice on the pencil, maybe you can still climb some of the new mixed lines over there?

Coal Creek – Lots going on here right now. Cold Heaven is touching down and looking steep. The slabs are in, as well as some of the other short routes in the area.

Redstone Pillar – Looks thin this year.

Drool – Second pitch only, first fell down.

Redstone Slabs – Look pretty lean and sun damaged.

Hays Falls –  Big as usual.

Marble Falls – Who knows, I wont go near this thing again. Once was enough.

In Glenwood Canyon, Hidden Falls is in and Glenwood Falls WAS in before all this warm weather, who knows if its still holding together.

Haven’t heard anything about Rifle yet.

  1. As of 01/11, Marble Falls had a lot of ice on it but it looked pretty thin at the top. Also on 1/11, I saw a couple getting ready to hike up to Crystal Visions, I think. I couldn’t tell exactly where they were going but there might be a path stomped out.

As of late last week, Rifle was looking good throughout the canyon with stuff touching down and in good shape.

Bulldog Creek Dog Walk (IV WI 4+)

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
