MountainProject Brings Us the Classics

It looks like the folks at Mountain Project.com are unveiling a few upgrades here and there. The most noticeable is the new featured photo, which is now a slideshow, but the one I really like is a list of the “classics” for a given area and/or cliff. So let’s say you are heading to Joshua Tree and only want to hit the most classic routes. Head over to the main page for Joshua Tree, and it gives you this list:

Right On 5.5 Trad, 4 pitches, 350 feet   Saddle Rocks Area : Saddle Rocks
SW Corner 5.6 Trad, 1 pitch, 50 feet   Ryan Campground : Headstone Rock
Double Cross 5.7+ Trad, 1 pitch, 95 feet   The Old Woman : The Old Woman – West Face
Mental Physics 5.7+ Trad, 2 pitches, 200 feet   Wonderland of Rocks : Lenticular Dome
Sail Away 5.8- Trad, 1 pitch, 100 feet   Real Hidden Valley : Hidden Tower
Walk on the Wild Side 5.8 Trad, 3 pitches, 250 feet   Saddle Rocks Area : Saddle Rocks
Pope’s Crack 5.9 Trad, 1 pitch, 70 feet   Echo Rock : Echo Rock – South Face
Touch And Go 5.9 Trad, 1 pitch, 70 feet   Echo Rock Area : Touch And Go Face
Exorcist 5.10a Trad, 1 pitch, 60 feet   Hall of Horrors : Hall of Horrors – East Wall…
Loose Lady 5.10a Trad, 1 pitch, 90 feet   Real Hidden Valley : Houser Buttress Area
Bird of Fire 5.10a Trad, 1 pitch, 80 feet   Split Rocks : Isles In The Sky
Illusion Dweller 5.10b Trad, 1 pitch, 100 feet   Real Hidden Valley : The Sentinel
Figures on A Landscape (aka Monkey on My Back) 5.10b R Trad, 3 pitches, 250 feet   Wonderland of Rocks : Astro Dome – North
Run For Your Life 5.10b R Trad, 1 pitch, 90 feet   Real Hidden Valley : Tumbling Rainbow Formation
Clean And Jerk 5.10c Trad, 1 pitch, 80 feet   Sports Challenge Rock : Sports Challenge Rock-East …
O’Kelley’s Crack 5.10c Trad, 1 pitch, 60 feet   Echo Rock Area : Rusty Wall
Rubicon 5.10c Trad, 1 pitch, 100 feet   Split Rocks : Rubicon Formation
Coarse And Buggy 5.11a/b Trad, 1 pitch, 80 feet   Roadside Rocks : Dihedral Rock
Leave It To Beaver (aka The Beaver) 5.12a Trad, 1 pitch, 70 feet   Sports Challenge Rock : Sports Challenge Rock-East …
Equinox 5.12c Trad, 1 pitch, 80 feet   Jerry’s Quarry and Lost Pen… : Jerry’s Quarry

Definitely some good stuff here, but Jtree is huge! How about just the Wonderland of Rocks, and instead of looking for climbs all day, I just want to go to the South Astro Dome? No problem:

Hex Marks The Poot 5.8 Trad, 2 pitches, 120 feet
Breakfast of Champions 5.8+ Trad, 2 pitches, 170 feet
Solid Gold 5.10a Trad, 2 pitches, 200 feet
Piggle Pugg 5.10c Trad, 1 pitch, 60 feet
Such A Savage 5.11a R Trad, 2 pitches, 170 feet

Super helpful for a traveling climber with only a little bit of time to spend at a spot. Way to go Mountain Project people, a great addition to the site!

  1. I am a bit fan of this but of course there are a few problems.

First this causes somethings similar to the 50 crowded classics.

Second the algorithm uses ascents or page views to determine classic status. The only place this is an issue is on the bigger page like the California classics. 60% classics are from yosemite… Not a single route from the Needles… What about Positive Vibrations…!!!

Bulldog Creek Dog Walk (IV WI 4+)

Hayden Carpenter and Tom Bohanon recently repeated an obscure ice climb on the south side of Mt Sopris. Given a brief mention in Jack Robert’s ice guide, Bulldog Creek Walk is described as being 100 meters of WI 4. What they found was seven pitches of ice in a remote setting that makes for one […]
